The Central Denmark Region collaborates with 24 district heating companies in the REFER-CDR project, where we are working with a more environmental- and climate friendly heat production, combined with a cheaper product to the plants' customers.

Viborg District Heating works with the utilization of surplus heat from cooling installations in the regional hospital in Viborg. The project is remarkable for utilizing heat energy, which otherwise would have been emitted to the birds.

Director, Morten Abildgaard, is a part of the steering committee in the REFER-partnership. He has stated: "The way I see it, it is key to have a body like the region to ensure cross-organisational collaboration that can secure access to fundings. If we did not have the regions, we would not have received funding for projects like these. We can thank REFER and the Central Denmark Region for that. This is an example of how, we as a region, can represent a geographical area as a unity to the EU, and thereby make a greater impact. This is the type of task I believe that the regions should address." (Quote translated from the article 'Samarbejde holder prisen lav og varmen grøn' from Fjernvarm).

Viborg District Heating receives technical counseling to heat pump solutions throughout the project. The heat pump can produce 9000 MWh annually. CO2 neutral district heating will replace natural gas, which has a big negative climate impact.
